The Sweet Gems of… Cleveland, Ohio?

Alright, I must say, I would have never guessed that Cleveland, Ohio has gems, but after a recent trip there, I’m pleased to say that I found a few!

I am obsessed with sweets! Unsurprisingly, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day because I’m able to satisfy my terrible sweet tooth before my day truly begins. My favorite thing about exploring a new city is finding a great breakfast spot and in Cleveland, I found Jack Flaps! The cozy, white brick interior was the perfect contrast to the urban, somewhat dilapidated street just steps away. With modest signage, this place is truly a hidden gem. The menu was right up my alley with sweet dishes on one side and savory on the other. Knowing myself, I knew exactly which side to choose. So many unique options including candied jalapeño “jackflaps”with salted caramel coffee crumble, limoncello “eggy bread” with black pepper basil syrup, and raspberry crisp waffles with vanilla mascarpone. I selected the lemon curd pancakes with berry jam. I was heartbroken to learn they were out of the berry jam, however, the wonderful waitress suggested a replacement… Raspberry coulis. Okay, Sold!

The “jackflaps” or pancakes were AMAZING! The lemon curd and raspberry coulis spread on top was the perfect blend of sweet and tart and the crumbled graham cracker on top provided the right amount of texture to the pancakes. The menu was so cool and this place is definitely a must for starting your day off on a sweet note.

If you leave Jack Flaps and walk about a mile, you stumble upon the cute bars and eateries that make up the Ohio City area. While walking, I saw what appeared to an old theatre of sorts complete with a marquee. After further investigation, I realized that this was an ice cream shop… How cute! Mitchell’s Homemade Ice Cream was the sweet gem that I stumbled upon. This, however, wasn’t your run-of-the-mill ice cream shop. This was almost like a homemade ice cream factory! Any true sweet lover’s paradise.

Mitchell’s is a local ice cream shop that believes in the use of fresh, local and organic ingredients to make their creations. With over 20 different flavors, it’s hard not to choose them all, but somehow I managed to choose just one. I went with Lemon Black Raspberry Yogurt in a waffle cone and Oh…My…Gosh… I think I found love in a cone.

I didn’t know what to expect on the sweet scene in Cleveland but I must say, I was truly wowed. With so many gems in one place, I think I may have to consider another trip here very soon!
